Color in Direct Animation: Len Lye & Norman McLaren

Exhibition Identity
Campaign
Poster

Color in Direct Animation is an exhibition celebrating Len Lye and Norman McLaren, important film directors who transformed the filmstrip into a medium for drawing and painting.

Compositions are drawn from saturated color palettes of Lye and McLaren’s films. Each poster reinterprets a distinct palette. When the colors are arranged together into a continuous gradient, they shift across the page like a filmstrip in motion. Optically, this creates a temporal experience of “animation”.
